BMW M850i: Blurring The Lines Between Coupes and Supercars

The new BMW M850i is one a kind. The car is so much better than we expected it to be. It should not be this amazing. On a serious note, the power is high with 523 horses in its 4.4-liter V8, turbocharged, M-caliber engine. It turns very tightly, grips so masterfully and has a design that is futuristic and alien. The 20-inch wheels are a rare find that really puts things into perspective. This is a sports coupe that feels like a supercar.

The competition for the BMW M850i comes from the Porsche 911 and that includes even the $111,900 price tag. The BMW M850i is lower and wider in a way that the 911 is not. Some comparable rides from Mercedes are also impressive but too weighted down in a heavy way that takes the fun airy feel out of the ride. The BMW M850i feels like a poised big cat ready to pounce as you cruise in it. It feels like the Aston Martin vantage because of the tight handling and aggressive poise. But it costs $30,000 more so…

The number on the M850i are impressive in the sense that it can go from 0-60 in about 3.6 seconds which equals the Vantage. It can go all the way to a limited 115mph, which is less than the Vantage’s 195mph at the end of the scale. Even with these features, it feels like the M850i should be able to more than what it was given by BMW. It has massive brakes, all-wheel drive with a rear bias and the electronic aids that make sure even the hardest rides turn easy.

This car can hit 200mph easily but is limited to the hierarchy within which it exists. So, why not let it fly if it wants to fly? BMW is not taking any chances with this one. It comes with features related to its predecessor from the 1900s; the Vintage 8-Series. It had a V12 option in addition to the V8. It has to compete with the M5 sibling too.

The M5 costs $10k less but it has more horsepower at 617 and is faster, hitting 60 after 3.1 seconds. It only lacks the sports feel of the M850i. Even though it gives off this sport vibe, the BMW M850i stops short of providing an over the top experience. When this model goes out of production lines later this year, it will have hit 700 in horsepower and be a corporate performance car.

BMW M850i: Blurring The Lines Between Coupes and Supercars

It is going to blur the line between a coupe and supercar. It complies when you want it to. It will be fierce, fast and tight when you want it to be. It may not possess the luxuries that models in the same category may have but it has everything that will make it comfortable. They use premium leather and will give the Ferrari and Aston Martin models a run for their money. It is a car worth considering.
