The Unapologetic Howard Stern: A Man Of Too Many Words

First Wife

When Howard met his first wife, Alison, they were both at Boston University together. It was a whirlwind romance as Howard recalls, “Within a week after our relationship began, I knew I was going to marry her.” They married at the young age of 24 in 1978 in Massachusetts, but in 1999 everything fell apart. Stern said the reason behind his failing marriage was, “I was totally neurotic and sort of consumed with work. I took work as the most important thing and the only thing.” We’re just getting started!

Three Beautiful Children

Alison and Howard had three children named Emily, Debra and Ashley. Emily, the eldest of the three is now over thirty and blames her father for the fact that she is single. Emily believes, “My dad’s emphasis on sexuality [in his career] kept me out of the dating ring [when I was younger].” She goes on to say, “I felt like the divorce came out of nowhere. I thought that sacred bond was so strong. He used to be one way, and then he marries a model.”

He remarried in 2008 to Beth Ostrosky

Just before his divorce to Alison was finalized in 2001, Howard started dating a television star and model by the name of Beth Ostrosky. They dated for about seven years before getting engaged and they finally got married in 2008 in the popular Le Cirque restaurant. The ceremony was officiated by Kelly Ripa’s husband and they are still married to this day. Beth is eighteen years his junior. Shocked? That is nothing compared to the secret we have to tell you about.

Banned From Clear Channel Radio

Howard has been working on radio stations for most of his adult life. In 2004 he called Clear Channel Radio home, a station that reached six different markets. That same year he was interviewing Rick Salomon about his adult tape with Paris Hilton and they both went into extreme detail whilst describing it. The FCC gave the station a fine of almost half a million dollars and he was banned from the show. Talk about too much information!

The Move to Satellite Radio

This ban was the reason that Howard was prompted to make his transition to satellite radio. The difference being is that you can make almost any sort of claims on the air and it will not be regulated by the FCC. Although his move to Sirius Satellite Radio did him a world of good he managed to get into arguments with them as well, this time over payment issues. Can’t believe your eyes? This is just the beginning!

Calling Out All Selena Fans

There is no point in arguing about someone’s taste in anything, especially music. Howard made this mistake when he called out fans of Selena Quintanilla back in 1995. His timing could not have been worse ass it came right after her death! He said, “Spanish people have the worst taste in music. … This music does absolutely nothing for me. Alvin and the Chipmunks have more soul.” As you can imagine he ended up apologizing for these words.

The Radio Station Owners Were Fines Heavily

There are a lot of people that pride themselves on the fact that they do not have a filter, and Howard Stern is one of these people. We cannot say how proud of his unfiltered mouth the radio stations that hosted the Howard Stern Show must have been when it accumulated over $2.5 million in fines throughout the various stations. They say any press is good press but losing that much money must have annoyed his bosses a whole lot.

He Experimented With Illegal Substances

With the majority of every other student in the 1970s, Howard Stern found himself experimenting with drugs. Those include psychedelic and hallucinogenic substances, but a bad trip on LSD made him stop. Recently he admitted to trying weed again. “I took a few hits on this thing and I was like, I was like, it was like doing acid again. I was like hallucinating, it’s so strong. I don’t know what they put in this stuff.”

The Howard Stern Show’s Success

Back in 1990 Howard finally started his own show called the Howard Stern Show on WWOR TV and it was a late night radio gig. It was such a big success that it even overtook Saturday Night Life and this seemed like the beginning of his true national fame. In true Stern fashion he dubbed himself the ‘King of All Media’. Stern also said, “You’ve got to be a little vicious. You’ve got to be narcissistic. You’ve got to be on fire about your career.”

He Has Written Two Books

When your life is as exciting and thrilling as Howard Stern’s you find yourself putting pen to paper and writing books. Stern has penned Miss America and Private Parts which both made it onto the New York Times Best Seller List. These books sold like there was no tomorrow and included information that even got them banned in a few book stores. In 1997 Private Parts came out as a film and was a box office hit.

Miss America Book Title

When he was asked how he came up with the Miss America title, Stern replied, “When I was a kid growing up in high school, I would come down the steps. My parents were disgusted by me. I had started this growth spurt. I looked like a big, hairy pencil. I’m walking down the steps and my father would look at me and I’d be in my underpants. And he looked down at his son who was sprouting with facial hair and he’d go, ‘Oh, look. There’s Miss America.”

He Tried His Hand At Politics

Believe it or not, in 1994 Howard Stern was inspired to join the political train and run for the Governor of New York. He ended up taking his name out of the race and backed a fellow contestant and friend, George Pataki who won. In 1995 a bill called the Howard Stern Bill was passed which restricted the construction on roads in New York and on Long Island during night time hours. He says, Well, first of all, I’m worth every penny.” Love that.

He Was a Judge on America’s Got Talent

When he decided to leave the AGT he said, “I did the most shocking thing of my career — I was on a family show. I thought it would be really cool to be a judge, because I think I have something to offer. If I had any dream about this, it’s that I could take someone who was struggling and seriously give advice. I was told over and over again that I had no talent. I was in college radio. No one was banking on me.”

A Brown Belt in Shotokan

You can say anything you want about Howard Stern, just don’t say it to his face. He has been an advocate and martial arts fan for a while now. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t softened over the years, saying, “I’ve actually apologized to some people I was a real jerk to, because I feel ashamed. I didn’t need to be that hungry. There was something going on inside me when I was angry and feeling very threatened and not feeling good about myself.”

He Goes Into a ‘zone’ When on the Air

People who have been in Stern’s presence when he is working say that he goes into a specific zone when he is on the air. “People who’ve seen him work without his signature dark glasses have claimed his eyes go ‘back and forth like a mile a minute.’ Howard said, ‘It’s almost like my eyes roll into the back of my head, and four hours later, the show’s over.” If you are shocked at that you have something else coming.

You Won’t Believe His Net Worth

This man makes an annual salary of, wait for it… $90 million which brings his net worth to a staggering $600 million. This is not just from radio, it also comes from his property, investment and endorsement deals. When asked about how his life has changed Howard has said that he counts his blessings every day, which is something heartwarming even from him. “I feel blessed, I really feel fulfilled,” said Stern about his life.

David Bowie Disappointed Him

Back in the day when Howard was just starting out he had the honor of having David Bowie join him in the studio. In fact, Bowie played a couple of his tunes, but what Stern wanted most was to talk to Bowie about his legendary music career. Bowie was not on board and this disappointed Howard greatly. They must have smoothed things over because Bowie played at his 44th birthday back in 1998. We love a happy ending.

He Suffers from OCD

Stern has come about suffering from various mental illnesses including OCD, anxiety and depression. “It would be pure id, total honesty, and I had a lot of rage, and I was going to let that rage out. … Which is great radio but really damaging to your personal life. You become a madman and that’s who I was,” Stern said. He is now much happier in life saying the treatment he takes is working and making feel much better.

He’s a Personal Friend of the President

Although he considers Donald Trump a personal friend, he got himself into an awkward position when he admitted to voting for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. “”I was put in a very awkward position of having to say publicly and to him that I am a Hillary Clinton supporter, and I always have been. And I was honest with Donald, I said, ‘Donald, you also supported Hillary.’ I do consider Donald a friend, but my politics are different,” he stated.

Howard Has a Soft Spot for Animals

Stern is a full time advocate for animals all over, coming in to save the day with his wife after terrible tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina and Rita. They even foster cats within their own home and have three designated foster rooms. Stern’s wife Beth says, “Even when the house is full, there’s never a question, Howard tells me to just go get more if they need us. There was a time where all the bathrooms and guest rooms were full.”

The Beef With Larry King

Well, by now we know that Stern cannot bite his tongue and when he has beef with someone it is likely the world is going to hear about it. Stern has labelled Larry King a “loser” and “the luckiest man in show business” saying, “He moved to CNN where he had no competition. As soon as MSNBC and Fox News gave him a little bit of competition, the cards folded.” This might not be a surprise but wait until you hear what we’ve learned about his wife!

Meditation Is Key

Sure, the man has no filter and has dabbled with a lot of stuff throughout his life, but he says that helped with quitting smoking and his OCD. Stern said, “For me, getting up at 4 a.m. and making time to meditate is a pain in the ass—but I do it. And there are times when you’re there and you’ll think I just don’t want to be doing this. But people shouldn’t think it’s a religion or anything like that; it’s like brushing your teeth, it’s a technique.”

He Owns a $52 Million Home

When you are worth $600 million it is no surprise that you want to have some fancy items in your wardrobe and follow that up with a few luxury cars and possible a mansion. This is exactly what Howard did when he invested in their $52 million Palm Beach home. The property covers 19,000 square feet and can accommodate even the pickiest guests. His wife also has a closet the size of regular people’s apartments.

Going Under the Knife

In 2006 Howard Stern and opted to have plastic surgery. He has a facelift, liposuction from his chin as well as a nose lift. He has been very open about his procedures, but it goes against everything he has said in the past. This i9s because Stern has attacked people’s images on the radio and he himself has taken to adjusting the way he looks. He also admitted to being scared of dying saying, “I don’t like being 50 and I don’t like thinking about death.”

Getting Fired from DC101

In 1982 an Air Florida plane crashed into the 14th Street Bridge when taking off and consequently killed 74 people. The next day, on air, Howard Stern called the airline to enquire how much it would cost to fly to the same bridge. As you can imagine his humor didn’t go down too well and he was fired just six months later. He once said, “I don’t think there’s one thing I’ve ever said on the radio that would have been found indecent or obscene.

The DeBella Funeral

A little bit of healthy competition never hurt anyone, but it was his competition with John DeBella, who was number one for a while that kept Stern gunning for success. When he did take the number one spot in 1990 Stern held a mock funeral for DeBella at Rittenhouse Square. Pretty sure John wasn’t impressed. As to his work ethic Stern has said, “When you hire me, you hire a nut who is going to work 24 hours a day for you and never, ever burn his audience.”

He Bullied Kathie Lee Gifford

Kathie Lee Gifford and Howard Stern had beef for over three decades, but the Today hostess managed to win his affections back even after all that time. “Howard Stern had a feud with me going on 30 years. I never met him. I never listened to his show. He hated my guts for 30 years,” Gifford, 64, said he, “Hated my husband, hated my children. Hated everything I stood for.” How did she do it? She marched right up to him and wished him well on his show.

Stern’s Race for Office

When in 1994 Howard Stern decided to run for governor of New York there were a couple of policy issues that he had which weren’t taken lightly by the public. For one he wanted to reinstate the death penalty, which as you can imagine did not go down well at all. Another policy he wanted to introduce was to limit overnight road work hours and remove highway tolls. When he had to go public with his financial information he withdrew from the race.

The Columbine Controversy

It doesn’t matter where you find yourself in the world, many of you will be able to recall that 1999 Columbine High School shooting that shook the world. It seems as though all those fines didn’t stop from Stern unleashing his tongue once more on the air. Making some truly distasteful and horrible comments Stern touched on the appearance of some of the girls running for their lives saying some of them were “really good looking girls”. Wonder what Beth thought about that? Read on to find out about her secret!

A Personal Day

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017 Howard did not turn up for work, taking a personal day and its safe to say it set people off talking. This made Stern particularly aggravated saying, “Why was it such a big deal that I took a f***ing day off? I wanted to take off today because my voice is still shot, but I was afraid to. I felt so f***ing guilty. I missed a day of work and all of a sudden it’s bigger news than James Comey.”

His Shocking Proposal

Well there is the right way to do things and then there is the Howard Stern way of doing things. That is to say he wasn’t PC about it, “I love you. You’re everything to me,” he had told her. “This is so gay … I’m asking you to spend the rest of your life with me.” The two made love immediately after Beth said, “Yes.” According to the bride-to-be, “[I kept my] hand up and was looking at my ring the whole time.” But what about the secret?

The Secret Is Out

Kind of. As we said Emily Stern was quite candid about her father. She said, “I believed that my parents were very much in love. I felt like the divorce came out of nowhere. I thought that sacred bond was so strong. He used to be one way, and then he marries a model.” It is reported that when Stern married Beth it caused major drama with his children, but he denied the claims saying he’s “very blessed to have such a great relationship” with his kids.

The IRS Scandal

Howard Stern go into some trouble in 2015 when the Howard Stern Show broadcast a conversation between an IRS agent by the name of Jimmy Forsyth and Judith Barrigas. Judith called in to ask for some advice regarding her tax, but somehow wires got crossed and there were snippets of their conversation that aired on the show which included her personal information including her phone number. Judith then attempted to sue Stern for negligence and invasion of privacy.

His Advice on Parenting

When it comes to his relationship with his children, we all know Howard Stern has had his fair share of drama, but this hasn’t stopped him from dishing out parenting advice to others. “They’ve been brutally honest with me and I appreciate that, and we found it very liberating and it brings us closer together,” he said. “I recommend this for any father out there, especially fathers with daughters: The best way to come together is to allow them to express themselves and tell you what they’re really feeling.”

He Has No Time for Religion

He has made it clear time and time again that he has little to no patience when it comes to religion, saying, “I’m sickened by all religions. Religion has divided people. I don’t think there’s any difference between the pope wearing a large hat and parading around with a smoking purse and an African painting his face white and praying to a rock.” Well we’re used to Stern bringing his opinions to the public by now, so this is no shock.

Keeping a Tight Schedule

Howard might have liked to party in the past, but it seems all of that has changed now. His wife Beth shares on their routines, “Everybody thinks, ‘Oh you’re married to Howard Stern … you must be laughing all the time. Yes, we are laughing all the time, but our life together, it is not crazy. We go to bed at 8 o’clock at night, even on the weekend, just because that’s our schedule. He gets up early for his radio show. We are definitely not wild and crazy.”

He Didn’t Know How to WHAT?

They might have been married for a while, but is it not sad that a man of 63 years had no idea how to make a cup of coffee? Beth took to Instagram to share a screenshot of their back and forth messaging. “If you are listening to my husband on @siriusxm (this is the text exchange between us when he didn’t know how to make coffee),” she captioned their convo, adding the hashtags, “#smile #heartbreaking.” That’s heartbreaking alright.

An Eternal Love

Beth and Howard wanted to make their love eternal and decided to get matching tattoos. When they suffered a loss of their ten-year-old bulldog Bianca in 2012 they decided to get her name etched on their skin. “She was the light of my life. My husband and I adopted her together, and she became our world,” Beth told Us Weekly in 2014. “[The tattoo] is a happy memory.” We hate to admit it, but that is actually too cute. His Daughter Emily

As you might have gathered Howard’s daughter is not her father’s biggest fan. She says, “My dad always instilled in us, ‘Everybody’s watching you, ” she said. While Howard “always said it was for our protection,” she attributes his warnings to narcissism. “I was alone. The belief that we were so different made it unhealthy,” said Emily. “Maybe because he was disconnected from the world, he experienced so much shame about who he was.” Now that is some bad family blood.

Learning How To Love

Some people might say that they learned about love from their parents, wives or kids, but Howard said that his learning process was a little different. I’ve learned I’m human because I’m so touched by my dog. My dog taught me how to love—love deeper. Beth and I don’t have a child and Bianca is sort of our child. Anybody who knows us as a couple, I mean personally, knows we just dote on Bianca—Bianca’s everything. She’s our fun. She’s our life. I spent the whole day crying.”
