Simply Marvel-ous: Marvel Celebrities’ Real-Life Relationships

Benedict Cumberbatch – Dr. Strange

As one of the top 100 comic book characters in history, Dr. Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch brought his classical training and outstanding talent to the Marvel stage. A brilliant but egotistical neuroscientist, Dr. Strange loses his ability to operate after a car accident. In search of a cure for his condition, he heads off to Nepal seeking out a famous healer rumored to live there. Instead, he finds the powerful sorceress, Mordo, who grudgingly agrees to train him and share her talents with him, including the art of bending time.

Benedict Cumberbatch & Sophie Hunter

A typical English gentleman, Benedict Cumberbatch, ha spent many years keeping his private life to himself but, four years ago, he finally spilled the beans about his relationship with Sophie Hunter. The UK heartthrob announced his engagement to the theater director and fellow actress in The Times newspaper in November 2014, breaking the hearts of fans across the world. The couple married just six months later, on the Isle of Wight and, two years later, welcomed a baby boy into the world. They are now expecting a second child.

Michael Fassbender – Magneto

Following in Sir Ian McKellen’s footprints is a formidable prospect for any actor and taking on the role he made his own, that of the complex mutant, Magneto, was particularly challenging for Michael Fassbender. Nevertheless, Fassbender “captured the complex and damaged background of Magneto” even if he didn’t manage to live up to the actor he describes as “a legend”. Fassbender took on the role in the 2011 superhero movie, X-Men: First Class and reprised his role in conjunction with McKellen in the 2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Michael Fassbender & Alicia Vikander

A talented actor himself, last year, Fassbender married the Oscar-winner, Alicia Vikander. The couple met the year before on the set of the period romance, The Light Between Oceans. Apparently, both stars were enamored with each other from the word go, with Vikander saying he future husband was instrumental in her, “daring to go all the way”. Fassbender returned the compliment, claiming he “was kind of scared when Alicia came—she was so fierce and hungry”. It seems the pair complement each other as much off screen as they did on screen.

Elizabeth Olsen – Scarlet Witch

The younger sister of the famous Olsen twins, Elizabeth took on the role of the powerful sorceress four years ago in the final scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The superhero sequel, starring Chris Evans in the title role, revealed the Sokovian siblings, Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and brother Pietro/Quicksilver, had a hatred for the Avengers and dedicated their lives and superpowers to bringing the organization to its knees, before switching sides and joining forces with them. Elizabeth will be reprising her role in the 2019 movie, Avengers 4.

Elizabeth Olsen & Robbie Arnett

The actress was rumored to be dating singer-songwriter, Robbie Arnett, for over a year before their relationship became public in September last year. The couple reportedly met in Mexico while on holiday but kept their relationship under wraps for several months before making their first public appearance as a couple at the Gersh Emmy party in Los Angeles last September. Arnett is a member of the indie band Milo Greene and, earlier this year revealed on The Late Late Show that, “Yeah, we live together. It already happened”.

Paul Bettany – Vision

Prior to playing Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Bettany provided the voice for the artificial intelligence system used by Tony Stark in Iron Man. The British actor recently revealed that he thought his career was over after a producer told him, “‘You’re done, you’re done in this town”. Straight after the argument with the unnamed producer, Bettany received a call offering him the part of the android Avengers member. The actor recalls thinking, “karma’s very quick these days” as he accepted the part of the android with God-like powers.

Paul Bettany & Jennifer Connelly

Bettany made a name for himself in the early Noughties, starring in films such as The Da Vinci Code and A Beautiful Mind. It was on the set of the latter that he met his wife, Jennifer Connelly, who won an Oscar for her performance as Alicia Nash. Bettany admits he’d had a crush on her for years, saying “I was like a stalker”. The couple have been married for 15 years and have three children. The high-profile couple have also collaborated on several movies, including Bettany’s directorial debut, Shelter.

Rebecca Romijn – Mystique

As the shape-shifting superhuman, Mystique, Romijn explored the character’s depths, including her sense of isolation and her anger at being different from other humans. With her reptilian blue skin and yellow eyes, Mystique has a deep relationship with fellow mutant, Magneto. Although Romijn was replaced by Jennifer Lawrence after the third X-men movie, she remained unruffled by the decision saying, “I could not think of a cooler girl to share that role with”. Nevertheless, the actress has also said she would be willing to reprise the role in the future.

Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell

The X-men star met Jerry O’Connell some 14 years ago in Las Vegas and, despite their long-standing relationship, say they argue regularly. According to O’Connell, “We get into fights regularly, and we’re like, ‘Is this it? Is this the one that’s going to make us get divorced?’ And then we’re like, ‘OK, let’s forget it”. The couple have 10-year-old twin daughters and last year co-starred in the romantic drama Love Locks which meant, O’Connell revealed, they “we got to go to Paris without our children” and rekindle their own romance

Anna Paquin – Rogue

Anna Paquin made her big screen debut in the 15 years ago in the New Zealand drama, The Piano. She took on the role of the powerful heroine, Rogue, in the first X-Men movie, playing the part of the mutant who establishes a strong father-daughter relationship with Wolverine. She later proves herself to have astonishing abilities, including the capacity to absorb both the memories and powers of other mutants. She reprised her role in X-Men: Days of Future Past, although her role in the final cut was reduced considerably.

Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer

While there has been plenty of discussion about Paquin’s sexuality after she announced she was bisexual in 2010, Paquin has been dismissive of the hype her declaration caused, saying, “My sexuality is not made up, for a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor to who they’re attracted to”. At the time, Paquin was already dating her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, and the couple tied the knot three years’ later. In addition to their twins, Paquin has two step-children from Moyer’s previous relationships.

Jessica Alba – Invisible Woman

Despite Alba’s successful career, which includes a Golden Globe nomination, her performance in the 2005 movie, Fantastic Four, wasn’t one of the highlights. Although a commercial success, the film received some damning reviews and even Alba has little positive to say about her performance as Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman. The actress claimed director Tim Story told her to stop trying to act so much, saying “We can CGI the tears in”. The actress has since admitted her experience on set made her want to stop acting.

Jessica Alba & Cash Warren

Every cloud has a silver lining, however, and it was on the set of the first Fantastic Four movie that Alba met her husband, Cash Warren. Warren was working as a production assistant when the couple met and, according to Alba, when she first met him, felt “like I’ve known him forever and I’m going to know him for the rest of my life”. The couple married in 2008 and have three children together, with their youngest being born on 31st December last year. Keep reading for more relationship revelations.

Hugh Jackman – Wolverine

One of the central characters in the X-Men franchise is undoubtedly the charismatic Wolverine. Jackman first took on the role of the clawed anti-hero 18 years ago and only decided to hang up his boots after giving the character all he had in the latest movie, Logan. Despite his public retirement from the role, Ryan Reynolds is keen to see him return to the role once more although he admits that “convincing Hugh of that would be a near-impossible feat”. Click on for news of Jackman’s marriage and life off screen.

Hugh Jackman & Deborra-Lee Furness

While many Hollywood celebrities seem to find holding down a long-term relationship rather challenging, Jackman seems to have been as successful in his private life as he has in his career. Way back in 1995, Jackman starred opposite Deborra-Lee Furness in the Australian TV series, Correlli. The couple married a year later and have been together ever since. Jackman credits his relationship’s longevity on his late start as a Hollywood celebrity, saying “Deb and I were already set together, a team, madly in love, like literally before it all happened”.

Robert Downey Jr. – Iron Man

The beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was marked by the first big-screen appearance of the character Iron Man. Played by the former Hollywood bad boy, Robert Downey Jr., this was one of the first cinematic superheroes not to take himself too seriously. Famous for his ability to ad lib, not everyone enjoys working with Downey and costar Jeff Bridges admitted the lack of organization during filming drove him crazy, saying “we would show up for the day’s work, not knowing what we were gonna shoot”.

Robert Downey Jr. & Susan Levin

After years of substance abuse and failed relationships, Downey finally met the woman who has been his rock for the past 15 years. Although film producer Susan Levin recalls, “The main thing I remember about meeting him was thinking how strange he was”, a few months later, she realized “this was it”. Downey adores his wife, saying, “There’s something about her that is so pure and … right”. The couple married in 2005 and, although they don’t have any children together, they seem to have a loving and stable relationship.

Halle Berry – Storm

As befits her name, Storm’s superpowers revolve around her ability to control the weather, making her one of the most powerful mutants on earth. The character is based on the real-life African rain queens. When Berry secured the role back in 2000, the former beauty pageant winner was relatively new to the big screen but her performance in X-Men soon catapulted her into the realm of superstardom. A couple of years later, the actress won an Academy Award for her portrayal of diner worker, Leticia Musgrove in Monster’s Ball.

Halle Berry & Alex Da Kid

During her career, Berry has been involved with a string of famous men, including the French actor, Olivier Martinez who she met on the set of the action thriller, Dark Tide, in 2010. That relationship lasted until 2015 when the couple announced they were divorcing. Last year, Berry was linked to British music producer, Alex Da Kid. Despite their 16-year age difference, the couple seemed to be making a go of it, but their relationship imploded after just five months. Don’t go yet – there’s more to come.

Chris Evans – Captain America

Alongside Iron Man, Captain America is one of the most long-standing comic characters on the big screen. Portrayed by Chris Evans, Captain America starts out life as the scrawny World War II soldier, Steve Rogers. After being cryogenically frozen, however, Rogers wakes up in the modern world with super-soldier powers. Reluctant to take on the role initially, because it involved a six-movie commitment, once Evans decided to take it on, he did so with complete conviction, although he says his superhero days are now officially over.

Chris Evans & Jenny Slate

Actress and comedian, Jenny Slate, has had something of an on/off relationship with Captain America and the couple even grew up just around the corner from one another. When the pair got together two years ago, Slater said, “It’s kind of like I got my dream seventh-grade boyfriend”.  The couple split up in early 2017 but reconciled after a few months. The relationship wasn’t to be, however, and Evans’ high-profile status eventually drove a wedge between them with Slater saying the attention simply became too much for her.

Chris Hemsworth – Tho

There was some skepticism surrounding the introduction of the character of the hammer-wielding god of thunder to the world where the likes of Deadpool and Iron Man rule the roost. Still, when Hemsworth finally won the role over his brother, Liam, he knew exactly what he was getting himself into and has developed the comedic element of his character during the franchise. According to Evans, the latest movie, Thor: Ragnarok included much “more improvisation and comedy” and stripped Thor of his former world and his legendary hammer Mjolnir.

Chris Hemsworth & Elsa Pataky

Heartthrob Hemsworth has been off the market since 2010 when he met the Spanish actress, Elsa Pataky. The couple have been together ever since, although Hemsworth admits his work commitments do put some pressure on the relationship. In an interview with Elle magazine last year, Hemsworth revealed, “”My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn’t really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love”. According to Hemsworth, “My biggest success would be having children and having a family of my own now”.

Forest Whittaker – Zuri

Marvel always seems keen to hire the best actors to star in their superhero movies and certainly picked a winner when they cast Forest Whittaker as Zuri in Black Panther. With an Oscar already under his belt, Whittaker brought his own brand of brilliance to the character, an African shaman with super-strength, depicting his grief over the death of King T’Chaka. Whitaker explained, Zuri “doesn’t grieve because he understands the movement of our consciousness and our spirits as it continues in a continuum of the universe”. Don’t go, there’s more.

Forest Whitaker & Keisha Nash

This quiet giant manages to have a successful marriage alongside his glittering Hollywood career. Whitaker met his wife, Keisha Nash, on the set of the 1994 thriller, Blown Away. Although she’s 12 years younger than him, the couple fell in love almost instantly and married in Jamaica in 1996. Nash says the secret to their happy marriage is continued support and respect for one another, adding, “”Anything that I’m doing that Forest’s able to be there and come and support me, he absolutely does”. The couple have four children together.

Paul Rudd – Ant-Man

While many of the Marvel movies combine humor with a darker side, Ant-man is, according to actor Paul Rudd, “funny but it has heart”. The first movie, Ant-Man, hit the big screens last summer and was described by one critic as “a surprisingly nimble, enjoyable origin story with a little-guy-saves-the-day quality”. The character’s powers come from a suit that enables him to increase his strength while shrinking in size. Rudd reprised his role as the tiny superhero in this year’s release, Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Paul Rudd & Julie Yaeger

The late-blooming superstar tied the knot with former publicist, Julie Yaeger, back in 2003. According to the actor, the possibility of marriage and children kept him positive during the most difficult times in his career, saying “If anything would ever get me down back then, I would always go…., ‘Oh, but … I’m gonna meet a girl and get married”. The couple divide their time between Greenwich Village and a more rural abode in upstate New York. They have two children together, their son Jack and daughter Darby.

Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool

The success of Deadpool is undeniable. Not only did it prove to be the most successful R-rated movie ever, it also received favorable critical acclaim, with many saying it brought a fresh approach to the genre of superhero movies. Even with all that support, Reynolds is the movie’s biggest fan, saying, “I was trying to make a cultural phenomenon”. Deadpool is an anti-hero character who has been mutilated and is renowned for his tendency to joke relentlessly, making him stand out from the usual heroes of this genre.

Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively

Before getting married to his current wife, Blake Lively, Reynolds went through two less successful relationships. In 2004, he became engaged to singer Alanis Morrissette but never actually went through with the wedding. After they split up, he married Scarlett Johansson, but they separated after just two years together. The couple are known for their joking and often tease each other, making them one of the most popular couples in Hollywood. The pair have now been married for six years and have two children together.

Mark Ruffalo – The Incredible Hulk

While Ruffalo was far from the first actor to take on the character of the great green monster, to date, he has been one of the most popular. Famously portrayed by Lou Ferigno in the Seventies, the Hulk, the alter-ego of the mild-mannered Bruce Banner, is such a well-known character that many people have an opinion about how he should be portrayed, putting unreasonable pressure on any actor taking on the role. According to Ruffalo, “I’ve never had a performance so badly reviewed even before I shot a single frame”.

Mark Ruffalo & Sunrise Coigney

Unlike many celebrity couples who met on film sets or at parties or premieres, Ruffalo and wife Sunrise Coigney met on the street in New York back in 1998. According to Ruffalo, back then, his future wife “thought I was a mess, but she believed in me and kept encouraging me”. Twenty years later and the couple are still going strong and now have three children together. A few years ago, Ruffalo opened up, saying, “Sunny and my friendship-slash-marriage-slash-love affair is… changing and growing along the way”.

Evan Peters – Quicksilve

The brother of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, has the capacity to travel fastest than the speed of sound and the stamina to keep going for hundreds of miles. At the same time as Peters was portraying the character in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the same character appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Despite the competition, Peters was very amicable about it, saying “I liked what they did with it. It was different. It was a completely different take on it”.

Evan Peters & Emma Roberts

Evan Peters met the niece of Julia Roberts, the celebrated actress Emma, back in 2012 on the set of the comedy, Adult World. A year later and the couple were all over the headlines after a heated argument resulted in Emma being arrested for domestic violence after giving her boyfriend a bloody nose. The couple have since reconciled and their on-off relationship is finally on stable ground, confirmed by their engagement last year. The two superstars looked very much in love at the Vanity Fair Oscars party earlier this year.

Bradley Cooper – Rocket Raccoon

It would be difficult to find any actor who suits the role of Rocket Raccoon more than Cooper. According to the Sniper star, the sharp-tongued, gun-slinging raccoon-type creature is “the sort of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas guy”. In addition to providing the voice for the character, some of Cooper’s facial expressions and movements were also recorded as a reference for the fuzzy creature’s cinematic realization. A natural impressionist, Cooper was the obvious choice for the part that has turned him into a cult hero.

Bradley Cooper & Irina Shayk

Cooper is not one to broadcast his private life to the world despite being involved with a woman who is no stranger to high-profile relationships. Prior to meeting Cooper, Russian model Irina Shayk was with the world-famous Cristiano Ronaldo for five years. That relationship ended at the beginning of 2015, shortly after which she started dating Cooper. Last year, the stunning couple celebrated the birth of their daughter, Lea de Seine so it looks like they’re pretty committed, even if they haven’t tied the knot yet.

Josh Brolin – Thanos

While one Marvel character is usually enough of a challenge for any actor, Josh Brolin has decided to take on two. At the same time as playing Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, he has also taken on the role of Cable in the forthcoming sequel to Deadpool. According to Brolin, The Mad Titan is not only one of the strongest characters in Avengers, he’s also one of the most intelligent, saying, “There’s this constant contrasting thing about this Neanderthalic lug-head who’s way more intelligent than anybody else in the movie.”

Josh Brolin & Kathryn Boyd

Brolin has a few relationships under his belt, including a nine-year marriage to fellow actress Diane Lane, which ended in 2013. A couple of years later, The Goonies star announced his engagement to his former assistant, Kathryn Boyd. Twenty years younger than Brolin, Boyd married the actor in North Carolina in 2016 and the couple are now expecting their first child together. Brolin is already a father, having had a son and daughter with ex-wife Alice Adair. Keep clicking for more relationship news.

Dave Bautista – Drax The Destroyer

Unlike other former wrestlers who’ve turned to acting, Bautista actually seems to have some talent for his second career. The former World Heavyweight Champion proved himself to be a talented character actor, managing to throw off the stigma surrounding his wrestling background. According to Bautista, “Sometimes it’s hard to get people to take me seriously as an actor when they just see me as this WWE muscle head”. The arch enemy of Thanos, Drax the Destroyer is the ultimate warrior, intent on avenging his slaughtered family.

Dave Bautista & Sarah Jade

Even as a wrestler, Bautista was no stranger to love, marrying his first wife, Glenda, when he was in his early 20s. In 1998, the former mixed martial artist married his second wife, Angie, who he remained with for eight years. After that marriage broke down, he briefly dated a couple of female wrestling stars, including Melina Perez. Rumor has it that Bautista is now married to a competitive pole dancer, Sarah Jade, whom he has been dating for several years.
