What is distracted driving? Distracted driving can be described as an action that takes place at the moment of driving that in one way or another alters the way a normal driver should drive. For instance, texting, making or receiving a call while driving is something that requires most of your attention. Consequently, little or no attention is left on the road and what could happen thereafter could possibly be bad news. Some may also argue that eating or listening to loud booming music may not interfere with your driving. However, this is quite dangerous as you may not hear a hoot from a motorist and you might end up knocking him down. Research indicates that 10 people die each day due to distracted driving in the U.S. These and other many distractions have been pointed fingers at following the numerous car accidents in Mid-South.
Data from the Shelby County Sheriff’s office revealed that the accidents that occurred on Hacks Cross Road were close to 100. Surprisingly, the accidents had happened during the first four months of the year. The main cause of the accident was just the same infamous reason, distracted driving. One Memphis driver went on to mention that Hacks Cross is quite dangerous , she also added that since the road is busy and congested, she tries to take her time as much as possible to avoid any accidents that might come up as a result of being rash.
The driver with whom we received so precious information from later said her name was Roma Hale and that she used the road mainly when visiting her sister. You could really feel the tension in the air when she explained how difficult it becomes when going up and down the road. She also narrated an incident in which she witnessed one of the accidents happening right in front of her. According to her, the victim was busy on her phone texting and she did not realize that she was quite close to the car that was ahead of her. She therefore ignorantly hit the car from behind and that is when she realized that she had been texting and forgotten all about driving.
It is now quite clear that most accidents in Memphis don’t occur as a result of drinking or use of un-roadworthy vehicles. The big question remains; How can distracted driving be curbed now that it has become a major threat for road safety in Tennesse.
