Understanding comprehensive car insurance

This is one of the highest levels of car insurance you can get.
There is third party cover that will cover damage done to other people’s vehicles but any damage that is done to your car is not covered and that will have to come from your own pocket. At least with comprehensive insurance, it may be more expensive than third party cover but any damages to your car are covered you only pay the excess.

Should I bother getting comprehensive cover?
With a comprehensive cover, you can claim for accidents that were your fault and for accidents where the blame cannot be proven. You can also claim for repairs for the likes of when a shopping trolley scratches your car, or someone scratches your car reversing out, but they have left the scene.
Without comprehensive cover you don’t have to empty your savings account to repair someone else’s car as well as your own. If your car is completely written off the comprehensive cover will replace your car but third party will not which means you are left without a car.

Is comprehensive cover expensive?
Comprehensive is often more expensive than the other policy types but when it offers so much more you need to weigh up whether the dearer premiums are worth what you get in the policy.
Make sure you understand what is included in the package. As it states its comprehensive insurance, but it may lag in a few spots and you may not be covered for all that you think you are covered for. Policies have extras they are just standard and are included in the package while others may charge you a fee for add these extras on. Don’t just assume you get what you think because then when it comes to claim, and you don’t get what you want it can be disappointing, so it is best to double check.

Popular add-ons:

Courtesy car:
Most insurers have an add-on that gives you access to another car while yours is being repaired. There are a few conditions that come with a courtesy car so be sure to check out the fine print before signing.

Breakdown cover
This is an optional extra that you can add to your policy for an extra charge. This means if you break down a mechanic will come to you and access the situation and fix it if he can otherwise it will be taken to the repair shop.

Can you save on your car insurance?
Be aware car insurance is not cheap. People often go for a lower cover to keep things cheap, but this is not always the best option. Having a low cover means you will pay out more for accidents and repairs especially if you are at fault. These days we have more important things to spend our money on.
